One reason the Dry Bulk Management Standard (DryBMS) works so efficiently is the structured framework that lies at its core. We say one reason, when in fact it’s the framework we know as the 4Ps.
The 4Ps refer to Performance, People, Plant and Process. Together they make up the model that helps all companies operating dry bulk vessels to function beyond compliance and continually improve their safety and environmental standards.
Following last week’s focus on Performance (Link) it’s now time to take a closer look at the second pillar in the framework, People.
The treatment of staff and crew both ashore and at sea should be the number one priority for any maritime organisation. The People pillar of the DryBMS platform’s 4Ps recognises that the competence, safety on board ship and well-being of individuals are at the heart of safe and effective dry shipping operations.
To gain a better understanding of this pillar, we’ll now take you through the essential components that define People under DryBMS.
Subject Area 7: HR Management & Recruitment (Office)
Establishing a strong organisational structure ashore, designed to support business goals through the effective deployment of skilled professionals and adequate resources.
Subject Area 8: Technical & HSSE Training (Office)
Ensuring that shore-based personnel are equipped with the right qualifications and up-to-date knowledge. This supports both current fleet operations and future growth, including compliance with maritime rules and regulations.
Subject Area 9: Crew Management & Recruitment
Employing ethical recruitment practices to select and assign competent crew members. This ensures vessels are manned by individuals ready to meet operational and regulatory demands.
Subject Area 10: Crew Technical & HSSE Training
Investing in ongoing training to build and maintain the technical expertise and safety mindset of seafarers on board ships.
Subject Area 11: Crew Familiarisation
Implementing structured programmes to help crew members understand the company’s mission, values, vessel systems, and emergency procedures. This sets them up for operational success from day one.
Subject Area 12: Contractor Management
Applying rigorous oversight of third-party contractors. There is a particular emphasis here on health and safety, especially in relation to onboard tasks on dry bulk carriers.
Subject Area 13: Crew Welfare
The company has a dedicated programme to promote and safeguard the well-being of vessel personnel, recognising that welfare is integral to safe and effective operations in the shipping industry.
These are the key components that make up the People pillar of the 4Ps. It’s imperative that their principles are adhered to and embedded into everyday operations. In doing so shipping operations can foster a culture of safety and collaboration, essential elements for every successful voyage. We speak about meeting compliance with DryBMS, but the People pillar is structured to achieve so much more than that. It’s about empowering an organisation. Through this empowerment shore and sea personnel can support one another and achieve safe, efficient, and sustainable dry bulk shipping operations.
